OHHH, CANADA!
Today we’re celebrating the top five reasons we love our neighbors in Canada!
French Language
Parlez-vous Français? Good, that makes one of us. We may not be able to speak it fluently, but we can marvel at how beautiful it sounds and all the French culture that comes along with it. (Baguette, anyone?)
Maple Syrup
You knew this was coming. Whether you put maple syrup on your pancakes, bacon, biscuits—or you’d just prefer to bathe in a vat of it, you can thank Canada for 80 percent of the syrupy tastiness tapped from trees. Over 8,000 businesses in Canada produce 80 percent of the Earth's syrup. (Sorry, Vermont!) Quite the monopoly, eh?
The Lack of Gravity
Lighten up! So maybe this is a strange thing to put on our top five list, but did you know that large parts of Canada are “missing” gravity? Particularly in the Hudson Bay area, gravity is lower, so if you visit these swaths of land, you will weigh less. While you’re not going to float away anytime soon, the phenomenon was first identified in the 1960s when the Earth's global gravity fields were being charted.
Justin Trudeau
How could we not like a prime minister who has a BA in education and taught drama, French, English, social studies, AND math in Vancouver. Talk about cross-curricular! It doesn’t hurt that he also inaugurated the Trudeau Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Toronto in April 2004.
Polar Bears
Half the world's polar bears call Canada their home. Wait, what? Yes, believe it or not, as many as two-thirds of the world’s bears live in Canada. Spot them when you drive in a tundra buggy, canoe the river, or lodge on their migration route.
