Happy International Literacy Day
International Literacy Day is tomorrow! Did you know more than 30 million adults in the United States cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third-grade level? (Source: Proliteracy)
What’s more is that this statistic has multi-generational ramifications: Children whose parents have low literacy levels have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves. (Source: National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)). In other words, children who grow up without learning to read successfully are highly likely to have children of their own who also struggle with literacy.
These statistics stress the need for comprehensive, developmentally appropriate literacy instruction in early elementary education. For children to succeed, schools need to provide teachers with the right professional development, tools, and resources to set their students up to master reading and writing.
